rince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Royal wedding, which took place on May 19, was an extravagant affair.

The newlyweds had specifically mentioned that they didn’t want wedding gifts. Kensington Palace, however, received loads of gift boxes and parcels worth millions from several companies and celebrities. Now, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are returning most of these wedding gifts, reported Express. These gifts are reportedly worth seven million pounds (Rs 62,97,52,190.13).

Why are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle returning the gifts?

A lot of these gifts were sent to the Royal couple for promotional purposes. Among the companies who sent wedding gifts was Bags of Love, which makes personalised swimwear. The company had reportedly gifted the couple a matching bikini and a swimming trunk combo, hoping they would wear them on their honeymoon.

The Royal family, however, has to follow strict rules surrounding the gifts they can accept. ”Gifts offered by private individuals living in the UK not personally known to the Member of the Royal Family should be refused where there are concerns about the propriety or motives of the donor or the gift itself,” state the guidelines.

It was also reported earlier that the Royal family could only accept and use gifts as long as they were valued at less than Pounds 150 (Rs 13,493.21).

Besides, before the wedding, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had urged people to donate to charity instead of sending them wedding gifts. The couple had also personally chosen sevencharities for the same, including Mumbai’s Myna Mahila Foundation.
